I am delighted to let you know that I will run another painting course at Casa Ana, high in the Alpujarra, Andalusia, in southern Spain, on the edge of the small village of Ferreirola. For those familiar with the books of Chris Stewart (‘Driving Over Lemons’ and others), who lives not far from the Casa Ana, the spectacular landscapes of the Sierra Nevada might seem familiar already, but for the rest of us, they are a treat still in store. If you are interested to join me for the painting course, please contact Tinca from CASA ANA. I hope you had a colourful and creative Summer. I would like to invite you to my next exhibition VIVA LA VIDA. It will be a group show with artists from Switzerland, Germany, UK and Cuba and I will also be performing spoken word poetry with music on the opening night on the 21st April 2023. For more details have a look at the poster or feel free to contact me. I would be delighted if you can join us, All the best, Bettina Dear Painters and Friends, As a member of the Tunnel artist group I would like to invite you to our next exhibition at the amazing Asylum Chapel. The show is inspired by Zamyatin’s 1924 novel WE. The Private View is on 18th March , 17:00 - 20:00 at Asylum Chapel, Peckham, Caroline Gardens, Asylum Rd, London SE15 2SQ. I would be delighted to meet you at the opening night or the following Sunday (13:00 – 17:00). With king regards and best wishes for your painting, Bettina "On March 18th, our collective The Tunnel will host its 28th exhibition. The collective was founded to ask what the role of the artist is in the 21st century, a question that has come into renewed focus in the last few months with the advances of AI generated images and words. Usually, we take a piece of literature as a jumping-off point for a theme, and this time we chose Yevgeny Zamyatin’s 1924 novel We." (Jamie Stantonian)

I would like to wish you all a very happy and creative 2023! I hope you were able to travel and paint again in exciting locations and expand your repertoire. Our painting week in Spain last year was a great success, so we decided to repeat the experience and return once more to the beautiful CASA ANA in Andalusia this June, 3rd - 10th. The course is already fully booked, but there is a waiting list should you be interested. I am sorry I cannot offer you more opportunities to paint with me, but as my creativity has expanded, the painting courses have had to take a back seat. Currently I am getting ready for an exciting touring exhibition with 4 international artists showing in Cuba, Switzerland, Germany, and London in 2023/24. You are cordially invited to the opening in Switzerland on 21st April (contact me for details). More poetry and music performances are also planned for this year and my third album UP BEAT (spoken word with music) will be fully released on the 27th Jan. Here is one of the VIDEOS, Colour Junkies/Orange Monkeys, accompanying the new album now on pre-release. It has already been featured on BBC Introducing (radio) and in the music magazine Louder Than War . You can listen to or buy the album HERE . I will keep in touch with you about all my art activities so you are always in the picture.
With best wishes for an UP BEAT start of the year! Bettina Dear Painters and Friends, Painting in October in Andalusia, Spain, was simply delightful. We had a fantastic week painting in the sunshine, Flamenco dancing with Paula and wine tasting in the evening with stunning sunsets as a background. The white washed villages set into the dramatic mountains of the Alpejurras made a wonderful subject to capture. For beginners there were picturesque windows, archways and ancient doors to paint. One day we also strolled to a nearby plateau accompanied by Andrea and her faithful donkey, from where we had the most wonderful views to sketch and paint. On the way there and back we drank the naturally sparkling spring water, which had the most amazing taste – natures Chanpagne! The food at Casa Ana was as last year outstandingly good, and it was hard to imagine to ever have to cook your own meals again. I also had the chance this time to stay on a week and finally had an evening with our wonderful host Anne to get to know each other better. We decided then and there to run another course next year, June, 3rd – 10th 2023 and of course you would be very welcome to join us.
I wish you a very happy painting autumn, Bettina Dear Friends, After visiting friends and family in Germany I’m now keeping busy with my installation for the next Tunnel artists group exhibition THE CHILDREN OF MEN at the Hundred Years Gallery. How lovely it was to be able to meet up last summer and venture to some of my favourite painting locations. The Spring course in Sicily was unfortunately still out of bounds, but the later painting weeks in Scotland, Devon and Spain went ahead full steam. Sadly the delightful art school in Olhao, Portugal, had to close down and will be very much missed in my painting calendar. I'd like to say thank you to all my wonderful colleagues in Portugal, who made our many painting weeks such a memorable experience. Plans for next year are looking different as I am postponing most courses to 2023 when I hope the travel restrictions will be fewer, better organised and of course less costly. I hope very much that you will keep on painting regardless of restrictions and obstacles and continue to let the paints flow into a kaleidoscope of forms and colours. Below are a few watercolours painted at past painting courses which might spur you on to keep painting, refresh your memory and inspire you to explore your colour palette. I wish you a wonderful time over the festive season and a very happy New Year,
Bettina PS For upcoming courses have a look at the home page or course pages. We had a wonderful time at Casa Ana in Spain where we painted the inspiring Andalusian landscape and from where we ventured out to whitewashed villages and surrounding hills, enjoyed local Flamenco dancers on the sun-filled terrace and tasted local wines. After getting all the travel paper work sorted and actually arriving at Malaga airport, it was time to relax and think of painting, leaving all worries of the last year behind. It is an easy task when you are greeted by sunshine, blue skies and our smiling host Anne and her team. After a scrumptious breakfast we set to work the next day and painted in the village square by the old water fountain. While we mixed paints, measured up buildings and decided on shadow colours, Sunday ceremonies with cakes were taking place all around us, not omitting offers of some delicious morsels. The following day was equally social when Dean arrived with his two ‘pack horses’ to take our painting gear and guide us together with Anne to a nearby rocky plateau with amazing mountain views. Our drinking water was gathered from a naturally sparking spring on the way! As always during the duration of my courses I gave daily watercolour demonstrations to get things going and to help with particular painting aspects like perspective, colour choice, working from sketches etc. Apart from painting the narrow village streets and traditional old buildings with their balconies and wine growing roof top terraces, we also visited the old town of Capileira, where the white buildings with their flat roofs and numerous attractive chimneys cling to the precipitously steep mountain side. A lovely place to sketch, have a leisurely lunch and do some light shopping. The day was suitably finished off with a sip of sparkling wine and two local Flamenco dancers who not only performed for us, but also explained the ancient and colourful origins of this exciting dance form. On our penultimate day we hopped again onto the minibus and were off to Fondales, another picturesque village a little lower down from Ferreirola. The little square offered views in all directions, down alley ways, into intimate corners amply adorned with flowerpots, narrow entrances with steps leading up to more buildings seemingly on top of each other. Maria’s teashop provided us with snacks and drinks to keep us going until dinner time when we indulged in yet another gorgeous meal. But before we tucked in we had a wine tasting hour, learning all about the wines of the area. Needless to say this was not just educational but also highly enjoyable. And so our last day arrived - much too soon! After another pleasurable day’s painting we had an informal show of some of our weeks work. It was extremely gratifying for me to see the amount of creativity generated during just one week. We celebrated with a last glass of pre-dinner Champagne followed by our last exquisite evening meal. With big thanks to Anne who owns Casa Ana, and who made us feel more than welcome and to everybody else who made our painting week so extremely enjoyable. "Delicious food, great painting locations and outstanding hospitality" More photos from the course in Spain and all courses on my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/holidaysforpainting |
